It’s just the two of them, standing across from one another. Between them is a field of flowers. Red, resilient, things. They’ll be dead when winter comes. Shuwen stands at Navy’s side, regarding Hideo and Uxie with quiet contemplation.[break][break]
“You both know what it means, yeah? Working together?” He asks the boy grown up too soon and the legendary Pokemon. “It means you two are going to have to go through hell. Already been through hell, sounds like it.” The wind kicks up. Flowers sway. Navy holds up a hand to fight the breeze, lighting a match. The tip of his cigar turns the red of a fresh fire. He’s accepted by now he won’t live long enough to fight lung cancer.[break][break]
“I’m in AQUA, you know. Technically, I’m supposed to tell Goode and her cronies.” Not the most flattering way to put it, but he made someone a promise. Sadly, Uxie serves as living proof he can’t keep his word to FERNANDO SILPH. He’ll have to do the next best thing.[break][break]
“But I’m not in the business of taking away someone’s agency, Kino. That’s what Rocket does. What they did to Eris and a bunch of other kids. Whatever you do, it’s your choice. What I wanna see here today…is if you two can fight together. It’s only going to get harder from here. I’ve had to bury too many kids in my lifetime. Prove to me, here and now, that Eris and I won’t have to bury you, and I’ll sleep easier at night.” He favors Hideo with a smile that the boy can’t see. He’s already offered the boy his help. He’s promised to keep his secret. All he can offer as a prize is his own peace of mind and a badge.[break][break]
“I guess Uxie could just wipe my memory, but this way makes for a better story.”

This was a battle Hideo would rather not have to fight. Not due to any lack of confidence on his part - he was more than confident in his own skills as a trainer, as a Gym Leader.

It was that Navy, the man he'd had as a challenger before, who he'd confided Uxie's presence to, didn't show the same confidence in him.

"'Course I know what that means," Hideo irritably answered. "I've always had to work close with all my Pokemon. Through the good times and the hellish times, and for whatever time is coming next."

Hideo quietly listened as Navy talked about his AQUA involvement, about how he was obligated to report Uxie's presence but didn't. Hideo let the man speak, quietly recalling that Melody Miro was also very well aware that he had Uxie - and that she too was in AQUA.

Navy wasn't the only AQUA member keeping this secret.

Hideo started with a sigh. "Well, I've already spent my entire life needing to prove myself, and having to fight to get anywhere. Even if I went around having my Pokemon wipe your memories, I think we'd end up in this kind of fight again. So we might as well get it over with so you know I can handle myself."

It was the first time he was going to have Uxie properly battle; every other time was under some kind of disguise, and even when restrained, Uxie's power was impressive.

"I just want to ask one thing: did you have a battle like this with Eris Halla too? Or was is it just me you're doubting?"

“Fought Eris a few times.” And every time, she pulled insane tricks out of her hat. Mesprit got involved the second time, which is how this whole debacle began. “If you wanna think of me as just one more roadblock, I don’t mind.” He nods, unseen by the boy. His hand clenches into a fist.[break][break]
“It’ll make a good story for Azelf, when we find him.” And he’s out there, somewhere. Waiting. Biding his time. He just has to be found – or forced to come out by circumstance. With so much going on in Hoenn, it stands to reason something will eventually draw him out. In that moment, they have to be ready to act.[break][break]
“I’m ready whenever you are. Normally, I get pretty whacky. Show the kids that show up to my gym what a real fight’s like. Don’t need to do any of that with you. You know what’s up. Uxie and you get the first move. Shuwen can take it.” The bear nods, as if that didn’t need to be said. His eyes settle on Uxie, wondering what trick the Pokemon will pull.[break][break]
Going by the type chart every kid learns in grade school, Shuwen’s at a disadvantage. When two legendaries decide to fight, that hardly seems to matter.[break][break]
“Come on!”

Perhaps Hideo had hoped hearing that Navy wasn't specifically focusing on him would bring him some amount of relief - but it didn't. He was still being forced to prove himself, with the chance of further "tests" in the future.

He'd just have to prove himself solidly the first time around.

"I did hear your Gym can get pretty intense," Hideo noted. "Supposed to be all about the battling part of being a trainer. Don't even have a non-traditional challenge…well, suppose the closest you got is still a battle anyways."

To Hideo, there was so much more to being a trainer than just battling. But those things weren't what he was here to do.

From what Hideo knew about Urushifu, they were always fighting-type - but they either had water-type or dark-type secondary to that. The latter would limit his options somewhat…though did make some other options much more powerful.

WATER

Uxie's word rang through Hideo's head - seemed his Pokemon already knew what they were dealing with here. Which meant their fight would be a bit more even.

Hideo normally let his Pokemon go loose when it came to battles, but he was here to prove to Navy he could work together with Uxie well.

"First move goes to the challenger at my Gym too…been a long while since I was a Gym challenger." Last time would've had to have been before Necrozma's appearance, when Uxie first appeared to him. It felt like forever ago. "So let's start with a good move. Uxie, let's throw'em for a loop, eh?"

Uxie nodded; a light would shine from both Pokemon, before a bright orb came out of both - and flew towards the other Pokemon. The Skill Swap would be apparent from Uxie first, as it gently descended to the ground, losing its ability to Levitate - but it would gain a new ability to compensate.

“Kinda,” the older trainer explains, “it’s about what it’s like to really be on a battlefield. Real wars aren’t like what people see on the TV.” He wonders what the real soldiers of the League, people like MATIAS SILPH or John Sullivan would have to say about that. Maybe, someday soon, he’ll have the chance to ask them.[break][break]
Not today.[break][break]
Today is about Hideo. His resolve. His capacity to work with Uxie. Shuwen looks down and sees his legs leave the ground. Like everything else in his life, this sparks no reaction from the bear. Instead, he kicks both feet in the air, gently twists, and seems to understand the principles of how this works. Navy muses, not for the first time, that legendary Pokemon are terrifying.[break][break]
Shuwen shoots towards Uxie. There is no finer natural predator for a fighter than a psychic. Even so, Shuwen charges without fear. If this fledgling legendary is to stand with his trainer, he will have to endure countless blows.[break][break]
“Ora!” The first blow comes, an aerial ace meant to knock Uxie up into the air. Sheer fighting spirit gathers around Shuwen’s feet as he means to fly up, following the curve of his punch. Suddenly, Navy is reminded of those shows kyle lopez and Gabe watched.[break][break]
“…kinda wish we could record this. We’d make some good money off this match.” He tries to lighten the mood with a joke. “Keep up the pressure, Shuwen!”

"Think I already got a good idea what battlefields are like by now," Hideo noted. "Been involved in a lotta stuff that's gone down in Hoenn. I was there when Groudon was making a volcano go active, when Rocket showed up at Littleroot, when Necrozma appeared at the Tree of Life…"

The latter had to have been the worst one he'd gone through. Thinking about it still made his heart ache. "...so I know they're not like stuff out of TV shows."

As the Urushifu got used to its new mobility, Uxie adjusted for the mobility it lost. Its tails helped it keep balance on its feet as it waddled around, clearly not meant to walk like this.

Fortunately, Uxie didn't have to waddle for long, as the Urushifu came by to bring it back up into the air - with an uppercut. Its small body provided no resistance, its sub-one-pound weight sent up with ease.

But Uxie wouldn't go without retaliation; it was the toughest of the Lake Trio, and a single strike like that wouldn't take it down. A Mystical Power enveloped the Uxie, a part firing forth as a beam at the Urushifu.

"Kinda wish we could record it too! I record all the matches at my Gym, though I don't think I'd record a match that Uxie got involved in. Or at least not make it public."

Maybe not until Uxie became public knowledge - though he was trying his best to avoid that ever happening.

“Arceus, kid.” He says with sympathy. Hideo has seen more in his short life than some men thrice his age. “…I hate that I believe you. Between the gods fighting for the region and Rocket, the whole situation’s fucked up.” Ordinarily, he has a filter. Whenever he’s around Eris Halla or the other children, he guards his tongue. Call it chauvinism, or proper etiquette. Either way, Hideo’s somber words spur him to powerful language.[break][break[
Right as Uxie’s actions spur Shuwen towards a powerful reprisal. His beam cascades down towards the battle bear. It hits him right on the money as his powerful legs beat against the ground. He rises up to meet Uxie while he’s still airborn, eager to pummel him further into the sky. Even a juvenile legend is powerful, as Uxie demonstrates. Shuwen bleeds. He bleeds from his eyes and his ears.[break][break]
Yet still, he climbs. Still, he punches. An Urshifu’s life is conflict. Every Urshifu knows that, whether they study a scroll or mysteriously wander into their trainer’s life amidst interdream mist. Shuwen’s fists flow together. Surging strikes beat against the legend, Shuwen knowing this opponent demands his full strength.[break][break]
“Keep up the pressure, Shuwen! Don’t let him have the initiative!!”

"If you think that's crazy? I've been in a lot more stuff than just that." Explorations through the Wilds, getting caught in that strange Cyber world, his initial involvement with the Lake Trio, and so much more than that - though he'd be here all day if he had to explain all those. "I was hoping I'd have an eventful time doing the Gym Circuit…and can't say I haven't gotten it."

Though the outcomes were rarely what he wanted; not always bad outcomes, but still unexpected. "Don't know if Hoenn was like that and I just missed it 'til now, or things really are getting worse faster."

Uxie was on guard the moment its attack was finished, ready for the Urushifu's retaliation. And a retaliation did come, Surging Strikes finding its body. The lack of air mobility was proving an issue, but one it would have to manage.

And despite the sheer contrast in size, Uxie was able to weather the blows. It wasn't just taking the attacks without reason: it was waiting for an opportunity to strike.

And the moment it got one, its Unseen Fist went straight for the Urushifu, a Drain Punch glowing around its small hand.

“Speaking as someone who’s lived here his whole life…it’s gotten worse. Shit’s been spiraling ever since Slateport got invaded.” On that day, he’d almost lost his life. Gabe came out of the events that transpired with an abiding disrespect for Bailey Cooper. When she was appointed Champion of Hoenn, it angered his brother in ways few other things had.[break][break]
“I was just on the sidelines, but Lopez told me all the dirty details. Plenty of stuff he probably shouldn’t have told a civilian. Before I showed up to Mt. Pyre, can’t really say I believed any of it was true. Before that, whenever anything big happened, I’d just grab my brother, a shotgun, and my truck. We’d head out to the woods. Ride out the storm.”[break][break]
The way Shuwen himself tries to ride out Uxie’s storm. When the retaliation comes, he makes a critical error. Having never dealt with the effects of a skill swap before, he thinks there’s a sure-fire way to defend himself. As Uxie comes in hot with the drain punch, he raises a protective barrier around himself. Try as he might to protect himself from the blow, Uxie shatters the barrier.[break][break]
Shuwen is struck. Navy swears he sees it from a dozen different angles as the bear is knocked back, his life energy being visibly drained. Uxie has moxie, both bear and trainer will give him that. Shuwen doesn’t fall. Not yet. He remains standing, hellbent on seeing this fight through to the end.[break][break]
“Shuwen! You know what we’ve gotta do, right?!” The bear nods.[break][break]
“So, Kino, is Uxie telling you how he’s doing? Got any orders for him?” There’s an edge to Navy’s voice, an eagerness, like he’s really getting into this fight. For a dragon trainer, his spirit resounds with fighting pokemon almost as strongly.

The confirmation didn't bring Hideo any relief. "...I was still living at home when that attack happened. My family didn't get caught up in it all even though we lived there." Perhaps he was fortunate his eldest sister was involved with Rocket - she might've been able to keep them safe. "Guess we were lucky. Heard a lot of people got hurt."

His family wasn't the kind to get a shotgun and ride out until everything was over; they just stayed home until everything was done. They'd be safer if they stayed out of danger.

Even if Hideo wanted to get involved, to help protect his home.

Uxie's tiny fist went fast and hard, breaking through the Protect with ease. Its tiny mass belied its strength, its strike taking in some of the stamina it removed. It did a good deal to restore what damage the Urushifu's strikes dealt, but didn't heal it all.

For the moment, Hideo's attention stuck to Navy. "'course Uxie's telling me what's going on," he answered, "All my Telepathic Pokemon do it. It's why I got so many of them. And Uxie doesn't even need Telepathy to do it."

"So I know it's the perfect time for this."

It felt dirty to do - he would never pull this on one of his own challengers.

He wasn't here for a mere friendly challenge: he was here to prove his strength in battle, against a Gym Leader whose test was apart from targeting trainers, anything goes. To show the reality of battle.

So he wouldn't hold back.

Hideo's hands moved forward - and clapped twice.

Uxie mimicked the gesture, clapping twice as a bright light would shine over the Urushifu; Uxie demanded an Encore.

Maybe, in his old age, Navy’s competitive streak is slipping. Maybe it was never that strong to begin with. His little brother had always been the competitive one. When Hideo traps Shuwen in a lose-lose scenario, all Navy can do is clap along with Uxie and his chosen trainer.[break][break]
Shuwen feels a powerful psychic pull on his mind. Even under ordinary circumstances, fighters were weak to that call. Notoriously possessed of one-track minds, they’re famously easy for psychics to out think. Navy’s Urshifu prides himself on having a strong mind. Perhaps, were Uxie some ordinary psychic, he would be able to resist the call.[break][break]
Uxie is no ordinary Pokemon, if such a thing truly even exists. Shuwen feels compelled to raise up his protective barrier again, as if he came up with the idea himself. From the look of satisfaction on the bear’s maw, he thinks this was a good play. Navy wonders if he even notices how fragile it looks.[break][break]
“Think I might have picked the wrong type.” Navy jokes, making light of a bad situation. “’Cause you make psychics look like some of the strongest Pokemon I’ve ever seen.”[break][break]
All he can do now is wait for what happens next. There’s only one trump card that can get him out of this situation, but he’s curious to see what Uxie and his talented young friend will do before he pulls the trigger. Everyone likes a good show.

For a moment, Hideo was caught off-guard by Navy clapping as well, half-expecting that his own strategy was about to be used against him as well. Uxie was quick to confirm that wasn't the case, another Protective barrier raised by the Urushifu.

"To be fair," Hideo said, "you challenged me and Uxie. Should'a known you'd be facing a Psychic." Not that he wasn't prepared for someone planning against a Psychic-type, but a Fighting-type certainly put the odds in his favor. "It's a really versatile type. Great for a lotta stuff outside of battle. My Beheeyem's been a big help to me, even when he was just an Elgyem back when I was living at home."

A shame a Beheeyem was too large to (comfortably) sit on his shoulder. Unlike Uxie.

The very same Uxie that was now aiming to exploit its opponent's vulnerability. It raised a hand, a blue ball of energy appearing above its hand. Several bolts of energy erupted from the ball, flying up into the sky…nowhere near the Urushifu.

The Future Sight was planted, but it would take time before Uxie would reap the rewards. But time was something it had - at the moment.

“Don’t worry, knew what I was getting into.” He favors Hideo with a confident smile before turning his attention to Shuwen. The smile fades, the playfulness in his words sharpening. When he speaks to his bear, it is with a warrior’s cadence.[break][break]
“Shuwen! Snap out of it! We’ve gotta put him on the backfoot! Use that move.” Shuwen turns to Navy, the words seemingly bringing the bear back to reality. Infinity energy surges, sending the flowers around him flying. Some drift away, others manage to cling to their roots. Surging with power, Shuwen rushes right at Uxie.[break][break]
“Oraaaaa!” He says as the first surging strike sails towards the psychic. And another. And another. Again and again he strikes. One fist flows into the next, a solid wall of water blasting Uxie.[break][break]
“ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA!”[break][break]
It’s been too long since Shuwen’s gotten serious against an opponent who wasn’t an Urshifu.[break][break]
“Hell if this ain’t fun.”

a secret technique of the rapid strike school. for a brief period of time, all offensive moves hit 3 times, but the follow-up attacks are weaker.

Whatever Uxie had planned, Hideo could trust. It'd yet to lead him astray, even if some of its actions could seem a bit odd or eccentric. Thankfully, it was never that kind of stuff it sounded like Mesprit put Eris Halla through.

But he knew something big was coming the moment he heard that Infinity Energy surging around; there was a z-move coming - a sure way to break out of that Encore. And Navy's command made it sound like a big attack. "Uxie, get ready!" Hideo shouted.

Though Uxie already knew what was coming: that Future Vision gave it a moment to peer into the future, and it knew that the Urushifu was going for its biggest attack. And had it still possessed its own ability to Levitate, it might've been able to avoid some strikes.

But the best it had was some lingering Mystical Power, which kept it at a slow descent. Nowhere near fast enough to dodge. So it'd have to play on the defensive.

A Protective barrier enveloped Uxie, to help it weather the attacks. The first flurry of punches, it held up, albeit with cracks. The second series broke through the shield, about half getting through to the small psychic.

The third series, it had little defense against beyond doing its best to not get hit in its disproportionately-large head, the strikes pushing it back.

But it wasn't helpless.

The bolts of energy it'd shot up moments ago, came crashing back down, the Future Sight bolts going straight towards the Urushifu.
